On est arrivé au Dordogne!!!!

Posted by Chris

We have finally arrived in the Bordongne following only a few car problems.

The carb is still causing us problems and we have managed to break the ignition some how when we stopped for fuel near Bordeaux. Tomorrow we head for Andorra to go skiing.

Pour tout le monde qui parle français nos regards vont au famille des Dales pour nous mettre dans une lit et nous faire manger heuresement !

Day One Completed!

Posted by Chris

Well, we have the first day without too many drama’s.  Early start as our ferry got in to Le Havre at 8am so we had a fair amount of time to get to our first nights stop.

Engine is running badly, we think problems with the carb but it could just be that the air in France is not as good as in Devon.  Photos that capture the day below!

We’re off!

Posted by Chris

Well, it’s been a busy couple of days with some last minute changes to the rally – such as it being cancelled!  We found out late on Wednesday evening that the FCO have changed the rating for Mauritania to ‘no travel’ from ‘only essential travel’.  It’s put a real downer on our last minute plans – we thought things were going well!

But… we’re still going!  See you all in the New Year.

Latest Artists Impressions Completed

Posted by Chris

Our thanks go out to Joe for his artists impression of us on our journey.  Some of you may have struggled to picture us driving through the Sahara so hopefully this will help.  In the diagram, you can clearly see me in the background behind the car with Andrew in the back seat.  Click on the image to see a larger version of it.  If we can commission more work before we leave there will be more images to follow…

Less than a Week to GO! ARGGHHHH!

Posted by Chris

Well, both Pano and I have been busy trying to get everything together for while we are away.  I cannot believe that a week today we will be (hopefully!) driving around somewhere in the South of France.  The past couple of weeks have gone by in a bit of a blur, but we are on the home straight now.

Thanks to everyone who has helped us raise so much money but we will still be adding in donations while we are away so keep them coming.  A big thanks to those others who have helped us source what we need to take – you know who you are but I won’t name you as some of them could land them in trouble with their employers…..

A fair few people have asked how they can keep in contact with our progress while we are away and we are setting up a text message service on the home page.  This means that we can send a message from wherever we are (based on having a signal obviously) and then the update will appear straight on the home page within a matter of seconds.  We are aiming to update it most days so keep popping back to see how we are getting on.

Busy Dakar Weekend!

Posted by Chris

We met up with everyone who is doing the rally with us on Saturday night in Bristol – it was a great night, if a little boozy!  We were supposed to be doing loads of planning, but it turned in to more of a piss up followed by some boxing (Well done David!)

Sunday morning we woke up somewhat bleary eyed in Bristol and got on the road to Reading to do some work on the car.  Thanks to Gary for spending the whole day working with for us.  We can add a new clutch, clutch cable and CV boots to the list of things we’ve done.

Charity Quiz Night – 18th November!

Posted by Chris

We’ve just arranged a Charity Quiz night with the Ten Tors in Kinsteignton on the 18th of November.  It would be great to see loads of you there.  The details are sketchy, in line with our plans for the rally but just rock up and buy me a beer and Pano a shandy and we’ll take it from there.

18th November @ 7pm.  Be there… or we’ll assume you don’t like us!

Last bits of Mechanical Work!

Posted by Chris

Well, it’s getting closer and closer to the leaving date so we are starting to get a bit nervous now!  In true male spirit, that means rather than planning the essential things we need to, we’ll just do some more work on the car instead!

This weekend (31/10) we are fitting a new water pump and replacing the cam belt – anyone want to help?

Next weekend (7/11) we are meeting up with all the other ‘competitors’ for a few beers and a bite to eat in Bristol, before heading off to Reading on Sunday morning to fit a new clutch and fit a new pair of CV boots thanks to Mercedes-Benz Reading.  It will quite likely be the cheapest car they have ever had through their garage – but we appreciate them letting us use their ramps, tools and of course Gary – cheers fella!

Brake Lines – UPGRADE

Posted by Chris

001We’ve been contacted by www.brake-lines.co.uk who have offered us some upgraded brake lines for the car.  These are going to be excellent for the journey, cos we were worried about the lines to the back wheels breaking.  Last thing we want to do is to lose all of our brake fluid so we had entertained the idea of disconnecting the rear brakes when the going started to get tough, but now we can have confidence that they will be fine!

Thanks guys, we really appreciate your support with this.  More info on www.brake-lines.co.uk can be seen on our SPONSORS page.

Signwriting…. DONE

Posted by Chris

Well, one of the suggestions from people who have done this before is to be as subtle as possible when going through some countries.  This is as subtle as we get!

Thanks to Signs Express in Plymouth for doing the work, and for Luke & Tom for putting together the designs for us.  Really appreciate it so thanks again to you both.
